Your adopted family, or pack, of African wild dogs lives in a region of northern Kenya called Samburu, where AWF scientist Benson Lengalen has been studying packs of dogs for several years as part of the Samburu-Laikipia Wild Dog Research Project.
The Latin name for the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) means “painted wolf,” which aptly describes this colorful creature. Its coat is dark brown with black and yellow patches. No two dogs have the same markings, just as no two people have the same fingerprints. Wild dogs have earned a reputation for ferocity, however that reputation is changing. Within a pack, they are very social and cooperative, which makes them one of the most efficient hunters among large carnivores.
Only 3,000 to 5,000 wild dogs remain on the entire continent, and the species is listed as endangered. Long persecuted and killed as a threat to livestock, public attitudes have recently begun to change, to recognize the value the dogs add to their ecology and, because their rarity makes them a draw for wildlife watchers, to tourism.
