A Herd of Grevy’s Zebras (Equus grevyi)
Swahili Name: Punda MiliaX
Country: Ethiopia, Kenya

Only about 3,500 Grevy’s zebras still exist in the wild, most of them in northern Kenya and a few pockets in southern Ethiopia. Lions, cheetah, and hyenas are their natural predators, but it is humans that have taken this zebra species to the brink of extinction. Increasingly, Grevy’s zebras are hunted for meat, or killed to prevent competition with livestock for scarce food and water. Yet this most distinctive species holds out the promise of future income through eco-tourism to many impoverished peoples living on communal lands. The attraction of the African savanna, it’s full complement of species intact, is a major draw the world over.

The African Wildlife Foundation is working to ensure that this largest of the surviving zebra species does not disappear forever. We are devising strategies to secure critical habitat and protect migration corridors and dispersal areas while providing livelihoods for local peoples.

More information on Grevy’s Zebras is included in the Factsheet, which will be delivered, along with a plush zebra and a personal adoption certificate (suitable for framing) to you or the person of your choice. Your adoption gift also includes an annual African Wildlife Foundation membership, and one-year subscription to our quarterly “African Wildlife News.”
