If you would like to receive multiple adoptions for multiple recipients please place separate orders for each adoption. This will not affect your overall cost as shipping and handling are set for each adoption. Grevy’s Zebra (Equus grevyi)
Age: Three to four years old
Country: Kenya Leperit, a young Grevy’s zebra stallion, lives in northern Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve. Wildlife scouts and local people can identify him by the notch in his right ear, a reminder of his pluck and the bravery of two young Samburu boys who saved him from jackals when he was about six months old. More information on Leperit is included in the Factsheet, which will be delivered, along with a plush zebra and a personal adoption certificate (suitable for framing) to you or the person of your choice. Your adoption gift also includes an annual African Wildlife Foundation membership, and one-year subscription to our quarterly “African Wildlife News.”
Did You Know? • Stripes to a zebra are like fingerprints to a human. No two patterns are identical. AWF researchers use the unique stripes to identify individuals. • Grevy's zebras can run up to 40 mph (64 kph). • Foals can run with the rest of the herd within an hour of their birth. They can also recognize their mothers using their eyesight and their sense of smell. • It is believed that hunting for skins in the late 1970s largely contributed to the 70% decline in Grevy's zebra numbers in Kenya. • No two zebras have the exact same stripe pattern. The stripes are said to confuse predators, distorting depth perception and making it difficult to pin-point individuals.
***IMPORTANT INFORMATION*** Please note that all adoptions being shipped to US addresses will be charged a flat shipping rate of $4.95 per adoption.
