A Pride of Lions (Panthera leo)
Swahili name: Simba
Countries: Largest populations in eastern and southern Africa; remnants elsewhere

Recent surveys indicate an alarming drop in the King of Beasts’ population. We know why – and what to do about it.

Scientists believe there were some 200,000 lions twenty years ago. Now, because of shrinking habitats and herders who both fear and respect lions as hunters, there are almost certainly no more than 23,000 left in the wild. Most national parks are too small to guarantee the safety and survival of genetically viable lion populations – and once a lion pride leaves the boundaries of a national park, the lions become targets. Your adoption will help the African Wildlife Foundation as we work to create a balance so that imperiled lions and local ranchers and farmers can coexist.

More information on lions and their survival is included in the Factsheet, which will be delivered along with a plush lion and a personal adoption certificate (suitable for framing) to you or the person of your choice. Your adoption also includes an annual African Wildlife Foundation membership, and one-year subscription to our quarterly “African Wildlife News.”

***IMPORTANT INFORMATION*** Please note that all adoptions being shipped to US addresses will be charged a flat shipping rate of $4.95 per adoption.
