A Herd of African Elephants (Loxodanta africana)
Swahili name: Tembo
Countries: Throughout east and southern Africa

Cruel ivory poaching and shrinking habitats require innovative and unusual solutions. Our programs offer real hope for this appealing flagship species.

For centuries, elephants have been prized as game animals and for their ivory. Today, the threat of ivory poaching is matched by climate change and the expansion of herding and farming communities. This expansion means that there is less hospitable land to be shared by elephants and humans. The African Wildlife Foundation is working to educate local people about the importance of preserving corridors so elephants can move safely (and without damage to fields and crops) from one seasonal grazing area to another. Your adoption of a herd of elephants will help us in our efforts to better protect viable elephant populations in their own habitats.

More information on elephants, the structure of a herd, and their survival is included in the Factsheet, which will be delivered along with a plush elephant and a personal adoption certificate (suitable for framing) to you or the person of your choice. Your adoption also includes an annual African Wildlife Foundation membership, and one-year subscription to our quarterly “African Wildlife News.”

***IMPORTANT INFORMATION*** Please note that all adoptions being shipped to US addresses will be charged a flat shipping rate of $4.95 per adoption. Canadian and Mexico addresses will be charged a flat rate of $18.95 shipping and handling per adoption. Overseas shipping addresses will be charged a flat rate of $24.95 per adoption.
