A Group of Mountain Gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei)
Swahili name: N'gagi
Countries: Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda

Only about 700 still exist in the wild, making mountain gorillas among the most endangered animals on the planet. We're creating the strategies to save them from extinction.

Mountain gorillas can live only in the misty mountain rainforests of east and central Africa. They are very shy creatures and do not breed in captivity, so protecting their fast-dwindling habitat is critical to their survival. Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and a chain of eight volcanoes known as the Virunga Volcanoes forms part of the border between northwest Rwanda, southwest Uganda, and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo -- a region burdened with a bloody political history and an ever-expanding human population hungry for the rich volcanic land and the forest's fuel resources.

Your adoption of a gorilla family will help the African Wildlife Foundation and its partners in gorilla conservation lead mountain gorilla protection with strategies proven effective over time. We'll put your contribution to work right away in our cutting-edge ranger-based monitoring program (where park rangers use GPS devices to pinpoint the movement of gorillas and locate poachers' snares). Your donation will also help us protect essential gorilla habitat, while promoting responsible ecotourism.

More information on mountain gorillas, their family structure, and their survival is included in the Factsheet, which will be delivered along with a plush mountain gorilla and a personal adoption certificate (suitable for framing) to you or the person of your choice. Your adoption also includes an annual African Wildlife Foundation membership and one-year subscription to our quarterly, “African Wildlife News.”
