Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei)
Age: 17 years old
Country: Rwanda
Charles, a wise mountain gorilla, is devoted to the safety of his family. He became a leader at an unusually early age.
Typically, mountain gorilla families are led by a “silverback” – an older male. But Charles became a leader – and a wise one – when he was still a “blackback.” His family of seven lives high in the misty forests of Rwanda’s Bisoke volcano. Local rangers have been working to help Charles’ group (called the Amaharo B group) be comfortable with human observation, and they report that Charles has been able to protect and expand his family by acquiring new members from other families that already have many silverbacks. Charles is a very strong character, and will probably be one of the most dominant males of any group in the future.
